And are you interested in shooting the Milky Way, making star trails and creating stunning time-lapses that will simply amaze your family and friends? But are you frustrated by the steep learning curve of night photography….and are the numbers and dimensions of California’s incredibly varied ecosystems simply overwhelming? If your answers are YES!, then this is THE photography workshop you’ve been waiting for! Now is your chance to shortcut all these hurdles in this all-in-one photography bundle as you experience the full beauty of the Golden State, both during the sunny hours of daylight as well as the in depths of darkness found only in the most remote, wilderness sites.
Join legendary landscape astrophotography pioneer Babak Tafreshi and renowned nightscape photography workshop leader and book author Mike Shaw on this first-of-its kind odyssey. You will receive extensive personal, one-on-one instruction on all aspects of astronomy, photography, time-lapse preparation as well as the natural history of California’s incredible biodiversity. Together, your instructors have over fifty years of expertise in their areas of expertise and have each taught thousands of students at locations across the globe. You are in the best possible hands to plunge into the richness of everything California has to offer.
Here are just a few “extremes” you will experience and photograph: The highest point in the Continental United States (Mt. Whitney; 14,505′); the lowest point in the continental US (Badwater, Death Valley (-279′); the oldest living thing in the world (Bristlecone Pines; ~4765 years old); and of course and most important – the impact of your experience! FIFTEEN full days and night immersed in an artistic retreat, the likes of which exists nowhere else.
This once-in-a-lifetime photographic journey begins with the two best nights of the month as you shoot the glowing full moon rising over the iconic cityscapes of captivating downtown Los Angeles. You will learn the secrets of planning the perfect moonrise, including timing, orientation, scouting, lens selection and best exposure strategies. The day after the full moonrise you will then travel to Death Valley National Park, where you will spend the next two days and nights soaking in the breathtaking view of its stark landscapes under the sharp bite of daylight and the brilliant moonlight of the nearly full, but waning gibbous moon.
Leaving Death Valley, you will wind through sequential desert ecosystems, as you leave the lowest point in the Continental US and arrive at Lone Pine, California, base of explorations to Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the US! In one day, you will experience both extremes! Of course, you’ll be able to enjoy the view of the Mt. Whitney peak from the safety of the adjacent lands, which are only at around 3500’ in altitude. You will then spend two nights in Lone Pine, where you will have ample opportunity to explore the secret byways of the famous Alabama Hills, home to more Western movies than you can count. Examples you’ll recognize include the Hopalong Cassidy films, The Gene Autry Show, The Lone Ranger and Bonanza, Gunga Din, How the West Was Won, Tremors, Gladiator, Star Trek Generations and parts of the film, Iron Man, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. You will visit a number of iconic spots, including Mobius Arch and Lathe Arch; as well as several much lesser known locations, including some that have appeared on National Geographic.
Your next stop is Bishop, California, home to Galen and Barbara Rowell’s Mountain Light Gallery. You’ll quickly discover the reasons that the Rowells settled in Bishop – the scenery is simply beyond comparison. Clear skies or cloudy, there are so many stunning vistas to choose from that you’re guaranteed to exhaust your batteries, memory cards or yourself before you’re ready to stop! You will photograph alpine mountains, ancient petroglyphs and high-altitude Bristlecone Pines, an area that includes the oldest living organism on the planet earth.
Leaving Bishop, you will travel thousands of feet up the rugged Eastern Sierra escarpment, through Yosemite National Park to your home for the next three nights in El Portal, California. Conveniently situated only a half-hours drive from Yosemite valley, El Portal is a relaxed, easy-going home base for your explorations of the world-class wonders of Yosemite National Park. The opportunities within the vaunted, glacier-sculpted landscapes of Yosemite will be yours for the taking. You will have three full days to be sure you have the chance to capture the essence of its magical valleys, meadows and mountains.
After descending from the mountains, your next stop will be the idyllic, artist towns and coastline just north of bustling San Francisco. You will visit the most-recognized viewpoints of the often fog-carpeted San Francisco Bay, with the twin peaks of the incredible Golden gate Bridge peeking through. You will also spend time under the stars of Pt. Reyes National Seashore, where the cool, salty ocean breezes will provide a welcome contrast to the warm dry air of the desert and mountains you’ve been breathing for the past several days.
Finally, after wrapping up your Extreme California adventure, you will be driven back to your starting point in Los Angeles. While your final destination might be the same as where you started, you will no doubt have changed as the result of your journeys. The sheer variety of world-class scenery along with the unrivaled opportunity to immerse yourself into your photography will be an experience you are guaranteed to treasure for the rest of your life!
