Learn the secrets of Milky Way and other night sky photography in the beautiful, clear night skies and scenery of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA)! Coupled with its reliably cloudless summer skies, the SMMNRA offers perhaps the finest opportunity in the entire United States to enjoy the night sky next to a major metropolitan area.
You will photograph the bright, galactic core of the Milky Way on one of the two best weekends of the year. You will learn how to create stunning, “Holy Grail” time-lapses going from sunset to total darkness. Finally, amaze your friends with the beautiful star trail images you will create with the star alignment of your choice.
Far more than a photo tour, you will spend time both in the classroom and in the field. Seminar topics will include astronomy and photography, as well as the crucial secrets of planning that can enable you get that trophy shot. You will also learn specialized techniques for post-processing your images and image sequences with Lightroom, Photoshop, StarStaX and LRTimelapse for professional quality images and time-lapses.
The workshop is timed immediately before the new Moon for the clearest, darkest skies. You can expect to view and photograph the Milky Way, many popular constellations, the Andromeda Galaxy and more.
Photography instruction will include composition, camera settings and what they do, exposure and lens selection. Astronomy instruction will give you plenty of opportunities to understand moon phases, star movement and to explore the night sky with a virtual planetarium and other planning apps.
This workshop is operated under the provisions of a special commercial permit from the United States National Park Service. It is limited to only eight participants to ensure you get plenty of individual, personalized attention.
Workshop fees do not include food, lodging, or transportation. You may wish to make a hotel reservation in the Thousand Oaks area for Thursday – Saturday since we will be out shooting late each night.
Equipment needed: Any camera with a manual (M) exposure setting, a tripod and a headlamp or other flashlight, preferably with a red light setting. Other helpful equipment includes gaffer’s tape, a focusing loupe and a remote shutter release. You will get the most from this class with a digital camera and fisheye, wide angle and street-zoom lenses. Standard lenses (e.g., 18 – 55 mm) are perfect. You will also want to bring your laptop for image post-processing.
Canon owners and others whose cameras lack a built-in interval timer capability will need either a remote switch/release with a locking mechanism or an external intervalometer/timer for the star trail portion of the workshop.
