You will experience Scotland’s rich variety of photographic opportunity in this incredible field workshop. From the bustling activity of the High Street to the aromas of Scottish distilleries to the elegant adornments of ancient castles to the fierce, windswept peaks of the Highland mountains to soothing seaside walks on remote beaches……your Scotland experience will simply take your breath away. The timing of the workshop in late May / early June ensures hours of lengthy shadows and twilight owing to Scotland’s high latitude. Having lived in the United Kingdom for two years and explored Scotland on foot and by bike, I can assure you that Scotland is a world of sensory overload that must be experienced to be believed!
You will begin your journey in Glasgow, the heart of Scotland’s industrial base. After our Meet and Greet meeting on Saturday morning, May 26, you will have the option of a distillery visit followed by an evening tour of some of Glasgow’s hidden photographic gems. You will stay in the Dakota Deluxe Glasgow Hotel Saturday night.
On Sunday, May 27, you will leave Glasgow at 8 am for a side excursion to Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city, on our way to our destination within the lochs. You will tour the imposing Edinburgh castle and learn about its deep history. You will also visit the Old Course at St. Andrews to experience the birthplace of gouf…I mean golf! Finally, you will journey onward to your destination nestled within the deep Scottish lochs. Here, you will spend the next two nights. You will have many opportunities to savor the fresh air of the country and the distinctive feel of Scotland by exploring the nearby lochs, railways and mountains, including the stunning Glen Coe. You may even spot the elusive Loch Ness monster – who knows?
On Tuesday, May 29, you will then be transported to your next destination deep in the Cairngorm mountains. Here, you will spend the next three nights. This will be a period of time to slow down, and savor the deep, warm colors of the Scottish landscapes. You will be able to appreciate the rhythm of the daily cycles of daylight and twilight, and learn how best to plan your photography to take full advantage of this knowledge. Having spent the last few days acclimatizing to Scotland, this will be a period of high productivity in planning, executing and post-processing even more trophy images for home!
On Friday, June 1, you will be transported to your next destination on the Isle of Skye for the next two nights. How best to describe the raw beauty of this area….rugged, stark, intimate? You will have to choose your own description from your experiences in this quietly serene destination. This will be your chance to synthesize the learning of the past several days to explore the shifting light and weather of beautiful Scotland.
On Sunday, June 3, you will pack your bags for your return trip to Glasgow, where you will be returned to the Dakota Deluxe Garden Hotel by 5 pm for your onward journey.
