Take your nightscape photo skills from great to spectacular!
Legendary nightscape pioneer Babak Tafreshi, Director and Founder of “The World At Night (TWAN); twanight.org, dreamview.net,” and National Geographic Photographer; and renowned night photography expert Mike Shaw, author of the forthcoming new book, “The Complete Guide to Landscape Astrophotography – Understanding, Planning, Creating and Processing Nightscape Images.” team up for the first time to offer you this extraordinary, intensive three-day & two-night field night photography workshop.
You will create incredible landscape astrophotography images of the brilliant California night skies with the gorgeous natural sandstone rock formations of California’s Alabama Hills, and the stunning Eastern Sierra, including Mt. Whitney, the tallest mountain in the continental United States, as your backdrop.
Bring your laptop – you will also get hands-on, detailed classroom instruction on the fundamentals of astronomy and landscape astrophotography. You will learn how to apply the latest tips, apps and methods for planning your nightscape images with pinpoint precision. You will also have the chance to learn specialized techniques for post-processing your images and image sequences with Lightroom, Photoshop, StarStaX and LRTimelapse for remarkable, trophy images and time-lapses.
Specific topics will include understanding the best phases of the moon, how to create stunning star trail images, immense, gigapixel panoramas, state-of-the-art light-painting techniques, when, where and how to shoot the Milky Way, and finally, how to create spectacular time-lapse videos featuring the transitions of sunrise and sunset.
The workshop is timed immediately after the new Moon for clear, dark skies. The soft light from the young, waxing crescent Moon will allow gentle illumination of the foreground during the early evening. The dates were also hand-picked to coincide with a photogenic conjunction between the crescent Moon and Jupiter! Finally, we may even get to see some early Perseid meteors!
Take away a better understanding of your current equipment, enhance your technical skill and proficiency in the art of photography, develop a greater understanding of astronomy, have fun, meet some new friends and be blown away by the beauty of the crystal-clear night sky in the Eastern Sierras!
Bonus – you will have a sneak preview of ALL the material from Mike Shaw’s forthcoming new book, “The Complete Guide to Landscape Astrophotography – Understanding, Planning, Creating and Processing Nightscape Images,” Focal Press / Routledge (2016/2017).
Instruction will include composition, camera settings and what they do, exposure and lens selection. You will have opportunities to explore wide-angle, macro, telephoto and street zoom lenses. We will work in small groups to give you plenty of individual, personalized attention.
Cost: $695.00 – Local transportation is not included. Workshop fees do not include food or lodging. You are responsible for arranging your own lodging.
Workshop conducted Friday, August 5 – Sunday, August 7, 2016, with a meet & greet in the evening of Thursday, August 4, at 7 pm in the hotel lobby. Workshop concludes at 5 pm, Sunday, August 7, 2016.
